Hill Country Ride VI - 2003

HCR VI was four days of great
riding. Making it even better was the fact that my oldest son, Kurt, was
able to join me for the Saturday ride. Chef, Cathy, Fergy and I met up to
ride down and we took some back roads out of Cleburne. All went well
except that I apparently passed a road we were supposed to turn on and we got in
about 25 bonus miles. A short while later I missed another turn and we got
in another 25 bonus miles. Nobody seemed to care.
On Friday we met up with
Wiredgeorge (George Lesho) who lives outside San Antonio. We rode along
the Guadaloupe River and then cut down FM 187 to Vanderpool and Utopia. WG
said he knew a good resturant in D'Hanis so we kept on going. WG cut off
from us there and we made our way back to Leakey and then to Comfort and
Luckenbach.
With Kurt in tow on Saturday we
rode all the roads we could squeeze into one day. Kurt, who thought he was
riding with a bunch of old guys, was pleasantly surprised at our brisk pace.
We broke him in good. He found that 350 miles on a crotch rocket in
the Hill Country was a real endurance feat. But he made it. We
introduced him to Luckenbach, the bat cave and riding the back roads after dark.
Rain on Saturday nite and Sunday
morning made for a change in plans. Kurt loaded his bike on the trailer
and took off for Houston. Rooster, Chef and Cathy, Kevin and I decided to
try and ride out of the rain by going east to Johnson City. We donned our
rain gear and took off. Rain subsided north of Johnson City and by the
time we had reached Lampasas we were all back into our regular riding duds.
We stopped for Mexican food in Hico (better place to eat than the resturant on
the corner) and then on into Dallas on US 87. West winds were a beast.
I rode over 100 miles with me left elbow locked in a countersteer and had a sore
elbow for three days after I got back.
