Hill Country Ride V - 2002
Departure was on Coit Road and Belt Line on Thursday morning. This was my first shot at mapping out a group route and as LOTR. There was Fergy, Tim and Lois Hargis and myself. We rode I-20 over to I-35W and then down to Tx 174, a horrible stretch of road from Burleson to Cleburne. After that we had a great ride down through Clifton and down to Gatesville, where we met Old and Slash at a great cafe for lunch. Great ride down FM 581 and FM 501 to Cherokee and then on in to Fredericksburg.
We rode the usual route around the threes backwards on Friday. TX 39 is a much better ride upstream on the Guadaloupe than down. Scenery is much better as you are riding into it rather that having to look back at it. We took TX 41 back and got tired of the long straights so we cut south at Mountain Home back into Kerrville. If you are looking for a long straight stretch of good road with no traffic where you can open it up, TX 41 is the place. You pass through the famous YO Ranch, which has game fences on both sides of the road so you don't have to worry much about deer and other critters in the road.
On Saturday we decided to take TX 16 almost to Bandera where we picked up 473 to Utopia. This is a beautiful ride which is ignored by many in their rush to ride the threes. A little excitement when we made the turn at Utopia and a big doe jumped across the road in front of me. Close call in the middle of nowhere. A few hundred yards down the road a big buck came out of the brush. I racked off the pipes and he stayed in the ditch. We ran/rode along side each other for another 150 yards or so until he could find a place to get out of the ditch. We made a great loop and ended up in Comfort at Buzzies Bar B Que. Cheap and good.
We took the Grapevine Road north where a turkey flew up in front of me. Scared the hell out of me but it missed. We by-passed Luckenbach. Gunnar was tired and Fergy wanted to get in some more riding. We rode over to Johnson City with a short detour through the Lyndon Johnson Historical Park. At Johnson City we headed north to pick up the FM to Sandy, Texas, and on to Willow, Texas, to view the bluebonnets. Rode the Willow Loop (a real pain on the weekends because of all the tourists who jam up the roads).
Sunday we just took the usual route home through Goldwaithe. Nice ride as far as Glen Rose. After that it is mostly a superslab job.
